A calorie food counter is a useful tool in achieving your weightloss goals. A calorie is a unit of energy that is often associated with food and dieting. The definition of a calorie is 'the amount of energy, or heat, it takes to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water 1 degree Celsius (1.8 degrees Fahrenheit)'. It is in effect the amount of potential energy that a food contains. The body uses this energy to live and breathe, and perform all our daily activities.

10 Ways to Cut Calories

1. Cut out the ABCs. Alcohol, Bread and Complex Carbs.(Cereals, Legumes and Pasta).

2. An obvious one- keep your cupboards bare. Go shopping on a full stomach, and you are less likely to fill your basket with foods that will pile on the calories.

3. If you feel like snacking reach for water first. It is the cheapest most effective appetite suppressant there is!

4. Concentrate on what you're eating. Do not eat while while watching TV, reading, studying or answering email.

5. Give up one bad eating habit. For example, if cakes are just one of your weaknesses cut them out. The following week, cut out another.

6. Become a label reader. Avoid foods which list sugar or fat as one of the first ingredients as they are higher in calories.

7. Use herbs and spices in place of butter and salt for seasoning vegetables.

8. Use Lettuce Leaves as Sandwich Bread Using lettuce leaves as slices of bread, or pita-like veggie wraps, is one of the best ways to save at least 100 calories per sandwich. Use the larger leaves from the outside of a head of lettuce, using three to four pieces. Lay sandwich filling on the inside, brush with fat free mayonnaise, mustard or another condiment you can afford calorie-wise, and wrap it all up in the lettuce leaves.
